A magánhangzók rövid-hosszú párokat alkotnak. /  Vowels are in short and long pairs:

a – á, e – é, i – í, o – ó, ö – ő, u – ú, ü – ű

a: magyar (Hungarian) – similar to English wash ; á: vár (wait) – similar to English car

e: megy (go) – similar to English pen ; é: négy (four) – similar to English take

i: kicsi (little) – similar to English big ; í: tíz (ten) – similar to English keep

o: orvos (doctor) – similar to English or ; ó: kóla (coke) – similar to English more

ö: köszi (thanks) – similar to English television ; ő: nő (woman) – similar to English sir

u: fut (run) – similar to English foot ; ú: nyúl (rabbit) – similar to English move

ü: üveg (bottle) – similar to German Stück ; ű: tűz (fire) – similar to German Übung

 

Mássalhangzók / Consonants:

c: cukor (sugar) – similar to English cats

cs: csirke (chicken) – similar to English watch

d: diák (student) – similar to English dig

dz: edz (do workout) – similar to English heads

dzs: dzsungel (jungle) – similar to English joke

f: fa (tree) – similar to English feel

g: szag (smell) – similar to English go

gy: egy (one) – similar to English duke

h: hal (fish) – similar to English house

j: jó (good) – similar to English you

k: kutya (dog) – similar to English kitchen

l: ló (horse) – similar to English live

ly: folyó (river) – similar to English young

m: munka (work) – similar to English mother

n: tanul (study) – similar to English now

ny: lány (girl) – similar to English new

p: nap (day) – similar to English print

q: kvartett (quartet) – similar to English queen

r: rossz (bad) – similar to English ring

s: piros (red) – similar to English shop

sz: szép (beautiful) – similar to English see

t: tanár (teacher) – similar to English hit

ty: tyúk (hen) – similar to English tune

v: vendég (guest) – similar to English level

w: WC (toilet) – similar to English vet

x: luxus (luxury) – similar to English taxi

y: party (party) – similar to English kiss

z: zárva (closed) – similar to English busy

zs: rizs (rice) – similar to English vision
